“Dub Will Tear Us Apart,” Jah Division
I’m sure I could find the story of the inception of Jah Division easily enough through a quick google. But sometimes it’s nice to leave things to the imagination. In my imagination, two dudes were sitting around, perhaps after enjoying some herbal remedies, listening to postpunk. One says to the other, “What if there were… a dub… Joy Division cover band?” The other blinks, and then it hits him: “Jah Division!” And despite the fact that neither of them knew how to play drums or bass or anything, they learned, from scratch, solely to carry out the concept of Jah Division, because they couldn’t not.
This concludes the parable of Jah Division. And I love this song.
Don’t you think they were probably just listening to Grace Jones’s dub version of She’s Lost Control? Which came out in 1980?
